Keeping it All in the Family:
Woodcock Refrigeration Company Celebrates Its 50th
Anniversary
SOUTH WINDSOR, CT. -- If you had told
Jack Woodcock back in the 1950s that someday he would be
celebrating the 50th anniversary of his own
business, he would have thought you were crazy. But this
year his family-owned and operated Woodcock Refrigeration
Company, Inc. of South Windsor is celebrating its 50th
year of operation — a milestone that Woodcock attributes to
the support of his wife Helen and clients like Sealtest,
Grand Union, Traveler’s Insurance, the Highland Park Market
and many others.
Back in the ‘50s Woodcock was working
at Manchester Dairy in refrigeration services and starting a
family. But fate intervened in 1955 when Sealtest purchased
Manchester Dairy and discontinued its refrigeration service.
As the company downsized Jack was given the opportunity to
purchase its refrigeration parts and truck and even sign on
as an independent contractor with Sealtest. The rest is
history.
Woodcock spent his days on the road
servicing Sealtest and, that same year, secured work with
Grand Union. A year later he hired his first technician. All
the while his wife, Helen, with whom he will celebrate his
60th wedding anniversary later this year, handled
the bookkeeping and raised their four kids.
“She was the best thing that ever
happened to me,” Woodcock proudly proclaims. “There is no
way this business would have grown and prospered without
her.” Additionally, Woodcock is quick to add, “We are only
as good as our help, and we have had great help over the
years and continue to have great help.”
Woodcock Refrigeration Company has
evolved over the years to include installation of heating
and air conditioning equipment, and contract maintenance
throughout Connecticut and Western Massachusetts.
The principles that drove Woodcock’s
success in business can provide lessons for aspiring
business owners. Diversity in services and the embracing of
technology were key components leading to the business’
longevity. The Company’s commitment to quality workmanship,
integrity, honesty, customer focus and the presence of a
stable work force also bolstered the business.
Woodcock and his wife not only built a
successful company but they also raised four achieving
children. Mark and Mathew have been managers at the Woodcock
Refrigeration Company for 30 and 20 years respectively; John
III is a practicing attorney in South Windsor and his
daughter, Nancy, runs her own computer business while
raising her children.
